Two games with different results were in the works for the Viking girls’ team last week.
The first five minutes of the girls’ game against Esko were pretty even, and it looked like the Vikings would be able to make a game of it against their bigger school rival. But that thought unraveled like loosely tied shoelaces, and, once Esko found its rhythm, it ramped up its offense and clamped down on defense and the game got out of hand.
The game was played on Friday, Feb. 10 at home.
At halftime the score was 48-7, and the Vikings were in a hole they couldn’t dribble, pass or shoot their way out of.
To top it off, it was senior night and parents were on hand to celebrate. The score did nothing to diminish the Viking fans that stood and honored seniors (twins) Sarah and Hannah Toftey, Bayley Cox, and Emily Jacobsen.
“Senior night can bring such a mix of emotions for the team knowing that the seniors are playing their last game of their careers at home,” said head coach Hannah Senty.
“Overall we had difficulty getting shots to fall. It is tough to compete when we shoot 18 percent from the field and 26 percent from the free throw line along with 24 turnovers.
“The girls did start strong in intensity, but it is tough to keep that energy when shots are not falling,” Senty said.
Vikings defeat the Silver Bay Mariners
Cook County girls traveled to Silver Bay on Tuesday, Feb. 14 to face the Silver Bay Mariners and came home with a 60-24 win.
Emily Jacobsen led all Viking scorers with 18 points. Sophie Eliasen had 15, Hannah Toftey netted 8, Bayley Cox 6, Arianna Poyirier 6, Jadzia Crow 3, and Abbie Crawford 1.
Jocelyn Russell led Silver Bay with 14 points.
“We started slightly slow, but then brought out the intensity after a couple minutes of play,” Coach Senty said. “The girls worked on their transition game and were able to make some easy buckets with good passes from teammates.
“The younger group got to see some playing time which was nice to get that experience for them and have the roles change where our starters are the ones now encouraging from the bench,” Senty said.
The girls only have two games left on their schedule. They travel to play Moose Lake/Willow River on Feb. 17 and then travel to Nashwauk Keewatin on Feb. 24 to wrap up regular season play.
