Cook County had no answers for the Barnum girls’ offense and smothering defense in a matchup between the two teams played here on Friday, February 3. The taller Barnum players had a big advantage inside and often got a lot of second and third chances to score under the basket. Meanwhile, Cook County had trouble making baskets even on open looks. It was one of those nights when shots weren’t falling, and the Vikings lost 56-16.
With the loss the Vikings record fell to 3-11 and 3-7 in the conference. Meanwhile the win pushed the Barnum Bombers record to 15-1 on the year, which is scary when one sees how young their roster is. Only three seniors suit up for the Bombers.
Katie Peck saw a lot of double teams when she had the ball but still managed to lead the team in scoring with nine points. MaKenzie (Mak) Fairbanks also drew a lot of attention from Barnum defenders who did their best to take away Cook County’s two biggest offensive threats. Mak finished with five points and Amery Oberg had two points. “We really struggled in many ways this game and plan to address those struggles in practice,” said Viking Head Coach Kelly Hawsen. “My hope is that we learn from this game, build some mental and physical toughness, and just move on from this one.”
Cook County played Two Harbors in Two Harbors on Tuesday, February 7, a rematch between the two teams from the Northshore. The Agates beat Cook County 58-43 on January 23 in Grand Marais. The Agates sport an 8-12 record going into the Tuesday game against the Vikings.
