Ouch!
One ball, any ball that rolled off of the rim instead of curling in and dropping through the cylinder into and through the net was the difference in the Vikings’ basketball game against a big school opponent recently.
The Cook County girls’ basketball team took the Denfeld Hunters to the wire while playing in the Two Harbors Holiday Tournament on Friday, December 28.
When the game was finished the Vikings lost by one point, 56-55.
Two sophomores and a junior scored in double figures for the Vikings.
Paisley Smith, a 5’9” sophomore forward finished with 16 points; Arianna Poyirier, a 5’7” sophomore guard netted 14 points; and Abbie Crawford, a 5’8” junior forward had 10 points.
Morgan Starkey, a 5’5” freshman guard had 9 points, Rhonnie Poyirier, a 5’6” freshman forward finished with 4 points and eighth-grader 5’8” forward Emmalli Myers contributed 2 points.
Viking head coach Kelly Hawsen noted that her team played without junior guard Alyssa Spry, and missed her leadership on the court.
“This was a tough loss,” coach Hawsen said. “We need to work on executing what we know in games, especially when games are close.”
But on the bright side, Hawsen has seen her young team show consistent improvement throughout the young season.
Against Denfeld, said the coach, “The girls moved the ball better than I have seen, which created opportunities for scoring.”
