The North Shore cross country team was on the road last week, traveling to Grand Rapids to compete in the Paul Bauer cross country meet against a field of both large and small schools, with the girls’ team placing third out of 11 schools and the boys finishing seventh.
The North Shore cross country team comprises boys and girls from Cook County, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors.
North Shore head cross country running coach April Wahlstrom said, “We had a great meet at Grand Rapids! Many kids had lots of improvement. The course was really nice, and there were many great teams to compete against.”
Girls Varsity
Olya Wright led the girl’s team with a 5th-place finish. Olya crossed the finish line in 20:22.7 for the 5k race. Lamar Gordon was right behind Wright in seventh place, finishing in 20:41.3. The Viking’s next three finishers were Sierra Geatz, 21st in 21:47.3; Jocelyn Carr, 30th in 22:25.8 and London Smith, 36th in 22:53.2. The top five places on each team area added up to make the final a score with the low score winning the competition.
Lexi Surbaugh was the sixth runner in for the Vikings. She placed 45th in 23:17. Brianna Monson was the team’s seventh runner. She placed 54th in 23:59.2.
Liz Nelson of Mountain Iron-Buhl placed first with a time of 19:49.4.
Duluth East won the competition with 37 points; Hibbing was second with 71, and North Shore had 84 points. There were 11 teams in the field.
Girls JV 5K
Claire Lindstrom placed 25th in the JV race, crossing the finish line in 25:18.6 to lead the junior varsity runners. The next two finishers were Genevieve Silence, 40th in 28:27 and Signe Myers, 44th in 28:48.
Girls Junior High 3.2K
Ryleigh Thorpe led the North Shor junior high with a 9th-place finish. Her time was 14:23 for the 3.2K distance. Next in was Emma Crook, 17th in 15:09; Grace Swaerz, 18th in 15:18; Elizabeth Swartz, 37th in 16:26; Sophia Lindstrom, 40th in 16:48; Amelia Saamanen, 43rd in 16:51; Hiver Moody, 45th in 16:59; Anni Dix, 46th in 17:00; Zoe Kacures, 50th in 17:13; Aili Gischia, 51st in 17:17; Schwanda Everson, 58th in 19:07; Leah Belmore, 61st in 19:38 and Patience Sifferath, placed 67th in 22:12.
Boys Varsity 5K
Ian Thorpe placed 11th out of 84 finishers to lead the North Shore boys to a seventh-place finish. Ian crossed the finish line in 17:42.9. The Vikings’ next finishers were
Cyrus Myers, 31st, 18:59.9; Elijah Smith, 34th, 19:14.7; Tristen Surbaugh, 45th, 19:50; Brayden Schmidt, 54th, 20:16.4; Nicholas Swartz, 63rd, 20:51 and Adam Oberg, 66th, 20:59.3.
Cameron Stocke of Virginia won the boys’ race. Cameron ran 15:48 for the 3.1-mile race.
Boys JV 5K
Andrew Hallberg placed 51st in the Boy’s Junior Varsity race. Andrew ran the 5K distance in 21:54. The next North shore finishers were Haddon /Taylor, 56th in 22:194; Reylan Brown, 61st in 22:55.3; Edwin Erickson, 64th in 22:57.4 and Finn Taylor, who placed 65th in 22:58.4
Boys 3.2K Junior High race
Chance Jacobsen’s 11th place was the best finish by a North Shore runner in the junior high boy’s race. Chance ran 11:57. The North Shore’s next four finishers were Grant Oberg, 16th in 12:20; Ethan Fish, 17th in 12:23; Talon DeDeBoer, 28th in 12:54; General Higgins, 39th in 13:22; Elias Pszwaro, 50th in 14:12; Eric Gischia, 52nd in 14:20; Sidney Litterest, 61st in 14:42; Cole Pederson, 70th in 15:37; Lute Jansen, 87th in 19:55; and Logan Smith was 89th in 22:13.
