The Cook County girls’ basketball team traveled to Two Harbors on Friday, December 6, to open their season against North Shore rival Two Harbors Agates.
Early on, the Vikings jumped out to a lead and went into the locker room at the half up 21-15.
During the second half, coach Kelly Hawsen said, “The girls played well the first half but struggled the second half with turning the ball over and missing box outs.”
“The first game gives us a great look at where we are at and what we can do during practice to improve for the next game.”
The Agates also made some adjustments to their defense in the second half, which helped to hold the Vikings to 13 second-half points while the Agates scored 28, coming away with a 43-34 victory.
Abbie Crawford led the Vikings with 12 points. Katie Peck ended her night with 8, Arianna Poyirier 6, Paisley Smith 4, and Rhonnie Poyirier had 4 points.
Both Abbie and Katie made two 3-point baskets in the game.
While the Vikings lost, they played some pretty great defense. No Agate player finished in double figures. Jada Larson, 7, and Shayla Marxen Schottenbauer, 7, led the double-A school in scoring.
The girls’ next game is against Northeast Range in Babbitt on Thursday, Dec. 12. On Dec. 16, the girls will play Cromwell at home. Varsity action starts at 4:45 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
