A good come back fell just short last Friday night but the Vikings girls’ varsity basketball team fought hard until the end, leaving everything they had on the court against McGregor.
The Cook County Girls’ varsity basketball team got off to a slow start last Friday night at home in a non-conference game against the McGregor Mercs. The Vikings were down 13-2 before Wei-Lani Likiaksa hit a couple of short shots to get the Vikings offense moving. Still, the Vikings trailed 31-17 at the half.
The Vikings man-defense caused turnovers, but the Vikings couldn’t always capitalize on them. Meanwhile the Mercs racked up ten fouls to four in the first half because of their tendency to swarm to the basketball when it got into the paint. While the Vikings were often getting fouled in the act of shooting, they had trouble converting their free throws.
Over the second half of play the Vikings whittled down the Mercs lead, falling just short, 53-46. Makenzie Fairbanks hit some big shots and ended her night with a team high 18 points. Wei-Lani finished with 12 points and Katie Pek had ten. Molly Quello and Amery Oberg each had four points to end the Viking scoring. The Vikings only had two three-point baskets in the game, one by Makenzie and one by Katie.
Courtney Gauthier, a junior guard, led McGregor with 15 points and junior forward Ava Guida had 12 points.
With the loss the Vikings record is now 2-4 on the year and McGregor is 4-8.
The Vikings net home game is January 20 against the 4-3 Mesabi East Giants. The varsity takes the floor at 4:45 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
