The Cook County girl’s basketball team was on the road for three straight games facing tough opponents, which resulted in three losses. The fourth loss came at home on Tuesday, January 24, against a big Mesabi East Giant team, but it was a good game.

First up was a road trip to Ely on January 16 to play a make-up game canceled due to stormy weather on December 22.

The Ely Timberwolves came into the game sporting an 11-2 record, and on this night, the Vikings would become another opponent to leave Ely without a win, with the Vikings falling 67-26.

South Ridge

On January 20, the girls traveled to Culver, Minnesota, to play another great team, the 11-4 South Ridge Panthers.

The South Ridge Panthers pounced on the Vikings early in their matchup, and the Vikings never had an answer for the Panther’s offense, losing 94-26.

When asked about the Viking’s two Iron Range opponents, Viking Head Coach Kelly Hawsen said, “First, we had a road trip to play the hot Ely Timberwolves. We have a pretty good bench of girls who can rotate in and provide our starters with some rest, but Ely and South Ridge are both tough opponents who shoot really well.”

On Monday night, the Vikings traveled to Two Harbors to face the Agates. This was a much better game for the Vikings. On Tuesday, January 24, Coach Hawsen was asked about the match against the Viking’s North Shore opponent. “Yesterday we played Two Harbors and had it tied at one point, but ultimately couldn’t get the win. The girls had a good shot selection, rebounded well, and hustled.”

The girls lost 58-43 to the much bigger school, and the Viking’s record fell to 2-8.

Vikings host Mesabi East

The 6-6 Mesabi East Giants came to town on Tuesday, January 24, to play what must have been a tired Viking team. But, tired or not, the Vikings played one of their best games of the year, with MaKenzie Fairbanks leading the way with 19 points.

The Vikings were down by ten points at the half but stayed close through three quarters. Hot shooting Marta Forsline ended any hopes of a Viking comeback, lighting the scoreboard up with 30 points. She and her teammate Alyssa Prophet, who had 16 points, were big for the Giants down the stretch, and the Giants pulled away to win 64-47 over a smaller Viking team that played hard until the final buzzer.

Sophomore guard Amelia Brune had a big night for the Vikings, scoring 12 points and pulling down a fist-full of rebounds. Katie Peck finished with nine points, Molly Quello had four, and Amery Oberg had three points in the hard-fought game.

With the loss the Vikings record is now 2-9 on the year and 2-6 in conference play.

Despite the heavy schedule, the Vikings get little rest. On Thursday, January 26, the girls played Silver Bay at home, and the following night (tonight), the Vikings play(ed) a rematch with Two Harbors at home. The game starts at 6:30 p.m.

The next home game for the Vikings is February 3 versus Barnum. The varsity takes the floor at 6:30 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
