The smell of popcorn and hotdogs cooking came from the concession stand outside the Pam Taylor gymnasium. Inside the gym, the Vikings were doing some home cooking of their own, taking a 25-21 lead into halftime over a very game Floodwood Polar Bears basketball team.

With Viking leading scorer and top post player Rhonnie Poyirier out of the lineup, junior forward Katie Peck picked up some of that slack underneath. And the Viking guards Amery Oberg, MaKenzie Fairbanks and forward Kamryn Jonson were getting to the hoop for baskets. Meanwhile, the Vikings zone defense kept the Polar Bears’ offense working hard to score points. So, everything was moving in the right direction even if they didn’t have their team leader on this night.

However, neither team could find their shooting touch in the second half, and for the Vikings, baskets were almost as rare as unicorns.

Meanwhile, Floodwood’s offense sputtered along just enough, but both teams seemed to be running on empty, although the effort on the floor was there.

Kamryn Johnson (14) put up a jump shot that fell through the net for two points.

Floodwood scored the first two points of the second half after six minutes of play as neither team could find their shooting range.

Amy Oberg hit a soft 15-footer to score the Vikings’ first two points in the second half with 9:01 left. Oberg’s basket put the Vikings back up by four, 27-23.

Over the next three minutes, Floodwood would score five points to take a 28-27 lead. However, the Vikings scored on their next possession to take their last lead of the night, 29-28.

Although the Vikings never quit, Floodwood held the Vikings to two points the rest of the way, giving up a total of six points for the half, and went on to take a 37-31 win.

Katie Peck and Kamryn Johnson each finished with ten points. Amery Oberg ended her night with six points and MaKenzie Fairbanks finished with five points, including one three-point basket.

Alice Irvine led Floodwood with 15 points.

The Vikings have several games coming up; they play Esko at home on February 18 at 4:45 p.m. Then, they play Denfeld away before finishing their season here with a game against Cromwell-Wright on February 25 at 6:30 p.m. And then they face Fon du Lac at 1 p.m. on February 26. So come out and cheer for your Vikings!

Drawing a lot of attention, Katie Peck still managed to get her shot off against the Floodwood Polar Bear defense.
