With senior co-captain Katie Peck out with an injury, the Cook County High School girls’ basketball team couldn’t find quite enough offense to stay with the Denfeld Hunters and lost 43-29. They also missed Katie’s defense and rebounding prowess as well.
The game was played on Tuesday, February 21, at home and was the last home game of the year. It was also Senior night, so folks had one last chance to cheer for the co-captain MaKenzie Fairbanks and Wei-Lani Likiaksa.
Neither team could find the basket in the first half and Denfeld went into the break up 14-10.
With seven minutes to play, the Vikings were down by 12, but back-to-back baskets by the Vikings made the lead eight. The Hunters missed a close shot on the next possession, and the Vikings rebounded. MaKenzie (Mak) took the ball the length of the court and fired up a long three that just glanced off the rim into a Denfeld player’s hands. A basket there might have changed the game. Meanwhile, it was the Hunters’ turn to take the ball the length of the court and found Alyssa Grammar open in the corner. She hit the three-ball, and the Hunters’ lead was back up to 11 points; the Vikings couldn’t score enough to winnow that lead. Over the second half, the Vikings scored 19 points while the Hunters netted 29.
MaKenzie Fairbanks led the Vikings with 15 points, two of those were three-point baskets. Molly Quello finished with five points; Amelia Brune had three, Wei Lani Likiaksa had two, Amelia Brune had two, and Mataya Fairbanks had two points.
The Hunters were led by Selah Reinertsen (18) and Grammar (10), who each scored double figures.
The Vikings play Fond du Lac Ojibwe on February 25 in Fond du Lac. After, the playoffs begin.
