It was a gritty performance for a half, but the Cook County High School Vikings young girls’ basketball team couldn’t hang with the taller, stronger Chisholm BlueStreak’s over the second half, and the Vikings lost 83-55 in a game played in the Pam Taylor gymnasium on February 7.

The Vikings made two nice runs in the first half. When Viking guards were able to find Rhonnie Poyirier, the Viking senior forward responded with baskets, but on this night the 19-3 BlueStreak’s would be too much for the young Vikings.

Chisolm led 37-29 at the halftime break.

The BlueStreaks used a full-court press for the second half that caused quite a few Viking turnovers. Back-to-back late threes by MaKenzie Fairbanks brought some excitement to Viking fans, but the BlueStreak’s quickly answered and expanded their lead.

Rhonnie Poyirier led the team with 19 points. Makenzie Fairbanks had 16 points, Kamryn Johnson 14, Molly Quello four and Katie Peck two.

Chisholm had four players score in double figures. Olivia Hutchings had 20, Tresa Baumgard 20, Jordan Temple 16, and Hannah Kne 12. Chisholm 83.

Fighting through the defense, Rhonnie Poyirier gets set to make two of her 19 points in the game against the Silver Bay Mariners.

Vikings beat the Mariners

Following a tough game against Chisholm, a tired group of Viking players took the court the next day, February 8, to face the Silver Bay Mariners.

The Vikings took a 31-26 lead into halftime, regrouped, and came out with a second wind in the second half and quickly built up a nice lead, taking the game 59-40.

An inspired Viking’s defense held the Mariners to 14 points in the second half.

Once again Rhonnie Poyirier led the tram with 19 points. Rhonnie battled hard underneath the basket, picking up rebounds and played tough defense.

Katie Peck shot the ball well, especially in the second half, and ended her night with 15 points. The team’s point guard, MaKenzie Fairbanks had a solid night shooting the ball, finishing with ten points. Forward Kamryn Johnson pulled down a fistful of rebounds and her defensive play was outstanding, with many deflections or steals of passes. Kamryn ended her night with six points. Hattie Crotteau had two points, Amery Oberg two and MaTaya Fairbanks one point.

Anna Hay worked hard to stop Silver Bay’s best player, Danika Thompson, from getting to the basket.

Senior guard Anna Hay didn’t score but played a strong game, especially on defense. Anna also got several rebounds and passed the ball well to teammates.

Silver Bay was led by the outstanding all around play of Junior guard Danika Thompson. Danika scored 27 points for the Mariners.

The next home game for the Vikings is against Esko on February 18. The game starts at 4:45 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
