Girls fall in the second game of the Ely Holiday Tournament

The Cook County High School Girls’ basketball team played two games in the Ely Holiday tournament, taking a win over the Carlton Bulldogs and losing the second game to Bigfork 68-39. The game against Carlton was completed in time for last week’s newspaper, but the second game happened after the paper was put to bed.

With the loss, the Viking’s record is 2-2 for the season.

Bigfork, said Viking Head Coach Kelly Hawsen, “Was a very scrappy, physical team. We struggled at times with scoring and rebounding but had some good runs at times.”

Senior forward Katie Peck led the team in scoring with 18 points. Katie made two three-point baskets in the contest. Makenzie Fairbanks scored nine, Molly Quello seven, and Elaina Deschampe scored three points in the game.

“We were glad to bring back the Christmas Overnight Tournament for the girls’ team as none of these girls had experienced the team overnight, which historically has been a big part of the Cook County Girls Program. I think it brings the girls together and sets the tone for the rest of the season,” said Coach Hawsen.

Next, the girls’ varsity plays the Floodwood Polar Bears at home on Friday, January 6, at 6:30 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
