Coach Kelly Hawsen said her young basketball team put up a good fight against the Two Harbors Agates, but fell just short, losing 52-45.
The game was played on Friday, December 7 in Two Harbors.
“The girls played tough against a bigger 2A school and never gave up,” Coach Hawsen said. “At one point we were down by 20 (points), and the girls battled back to within 7 points.
“We really struggled to box out until we put in one of our ninth-graders, Rhonnie Poyirier, who really took over the boards against much bigger post players,” Hawsen said.
Leading the Vikings in scoring was Ariana Poyirier, who scored 18 points. Paisley Smith netted 11 points; Abbie Crawford had 8; Alyssa Smith, 4; Morgan Starkey, 2; and Ronnie Poyirier had 2 points.
Vikings lose to Carlton
Once again the Cook County girls’ basketball team played a good solid game, but once again, they fell just short of winning.
The Vikings traveled to Carlton on Monday, Dec. 10 to face the Carlton Bulldogs and despite getting an early lead, they fell 55-49.
“This was a loss as we had a good lead in the first half,” noted Coach Hawsen. “We are still a young team and will work on close game situations more to support the girls getting more comfortable in those types of situations. It’s always a tough loss when the game is close, but we plan to use that as motivation moving forward.”
Three Vikings scored in double figures.
Abbie Crawford led the team with15 points, Arianana Poyirier dropped in 14 points, and Paisley Smith added 10. The other Vikings who scored points were Alyssa Smith 5, Emma Gesch 4, and Rhonnie Poyirier had 1 point.
The Vikings played Northeast Range at home on Thursday, Dec. 13, after the paper was put to bed.
On Friday, Dec. 14 the team will take the home floor at 4:45 p.m. and play the Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels. They also have a home game against the Wrenshall Wrens on Tuesday, December 18. The game will be played at 6:30 p.m. in the Pam Taylor gymnasium. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
