It was another great year for the combined Cook County/Two Harbors cross country boys’ and girls’ teams. Two boys qualified as individuals for the state cross country meet and the girls qualified in the team competition.
When the team scores were added up, the Cook County/Two Harbors girls’ North Shore Storm cross country team placed 11th in the Minnesota State High School League Girls Class AA 5000-meter run. The state meet was held in Northfield at St. Olaf college on November 6.
Cook County Sophomore Olya Wright led North Shore with a 64th place. Olya finished the race in 20:39. Two Harbors runners Autumn Smith, 68th, 20:46; Lamar Gordon, 79th, 20:57; and Jocelyn Carr, 116th, 21:54, were the next finishers. Anna Hay, Grand Marais, was the North Shore Storm’s fifth runner. Anna placed 119th and crossed the line 21:57. The Vikings sixth finisher was London Smith. London placed 124th and ran 22:05. Trinity Giddings did not finish.
The team’s top five finishers’ places are added up to make the team scores.
Isabelle Schmitz, Hutchinson, won the individual girl’s title. Isabelle, a sophomore, ran 17:59.
St. Paul Highland Park won the Class AA team title with 61 points. Lexi Lamppa, an eighth grader from Rock Ridge, led area finishers with a 27th place. Lexie ran the 3.1-mile distance in 19:52.
Two North Shore Storm boys qualified for the boy’s state Class AA cross country meet. Nate Bilben placed 54th in 17:30 and Ian Thorpe placed 86th in 17:55.
Adrian Keller, a junior from Breck, won the boys’ Class AA crown with a time of 15:53. Big Lake won the team title with 92 points. Cameron Stocke, a junior from Virginia who runs for Rock Ridge High School, was the highest area finisher with a sixth place. Cameron ran 16:11.
