After a tough stretch of games playing larger schools, last week, the Vikings met an opponent, a neighbor, and played a game against a school about the same class size as Cook County, and the results were in the Vikings’ favor.
The Cook County High School girls’ basketball team used a strong second half to put away the Silver Bay Mariners in a game played at home on Thursday, January 26.
This was the second meeting of the year for the North Shore opponents. The Vikings won the first game 63-40 in Silver Bay on December 20.
Baskets were hard to come by in the first 18 minutes, but the Vikings staked a six-point lead of 23-17 at the half. The Vikings far outrebounded the Mariners in the first period, getting second, third, and sometimes fourth shots at the basket, but the ball had a way of rolling out instead of in.
The Vikings seemed settled and focused coming out of the locker room for the second half.
A running jumper in the lane by Makenzie Fairbanks got the Vikings’ offense off to a quick start. On the next play, MacKenzie stole the ball from a Silver Bay guard and raced down the court, pulling up and feeding a nice pass to Katie Peck, who ran by the defense on her way to an easy layup. Fifteen seconds later, the Vikings had their third basket in a row on another hoop by Fairbanks. The Vikings would score 12 points before Silver Bay would get a basket, and if not for eight points at the end of the game for the Marries, the final 59-38 final score would have been that much worse for the visitors.
Makenzie finished the game with 23 points, making one three-point shot. MaKenzie was 2-2 on her free throws. Katie Peck hit two three-point baskets on her way to 22 points. Katie also led the team in rebounding, pulling down 19 rebounds. Amelia Brune ended her night with five points, Elaina Deschampe scored three points on a long shot from behind the three-point line, and Amery Oberg, Molly Quello, and Wei-Lani Likiaksa each had two points in the game.
