It was a busy week for the Cook County Girls’ basketball team, playing three games in ten days. First up was an away game against the big Duluth school, the Denfeld Hunters.

The Vikings traveled to Duluth on Wednesday, February 23, to face the Denfeld Hunters on the Hunter’s home court and the Vikings came away with a 60-50 victory.

Once again, Rhonnie Poyirier led the way with 29 points. The senior forward played a tremendous all-around game on offense and defense. Junior guard MaKenzie Fairbanks scored 15 points, Katie Peck 11, Molly Quello two, Anna Hay two, and Kamryn Johnson one point.

It was parents’ night, so before the game started, the girls and parents or guardians came out onto the floor for recognition. It was a touching moment as most of the girls gave their parents a hug when the tribute from Coach Kelly Hawsen ended.

The Vikings hosted the 18-5 Cromwell-Wright Cardinals on Friday night, February 25 and despite the Vikings playing hard, Cromwell raced to a big lead. Going into halftime, the Vikings trailed 46-13. Cromwell would hold Cook County to four points over the next half and won 81-17.

In the first half, Cromwell used a full-court press, which caused quite a few Viking turnovers. The Cardinal team was deep and shot the ball well. It’s been said that most of these Cromwell-Wright girls have a basket in the barn and shoot year-round, and it looks like that is true. On this night, a young Viking team was no match for Cromwell, and it didn’t help that one of the Viking starters, Kamryn Johnson, was hurt in the first minute of play and was out for the rest of the game.

Rhonnie Poyirier led the Vikings with 11 points. Katie Peck scored four and Makenzie Fairbanks had two points in the contest.

Andrea Pocernich, a senior forward, led Cromwell with 21 points and Isabella Anderson, a freshman guard, had 14. Nine players for Cromwell score four or more points each in the game.

Vikings beat Fond Du Lac

Coming off the game against Cromwell, a tired Vikings’ team took to the court the next day at 1 p.m. to face Fond du Lac. It took a while to get their energy back, but by halftime, the Vikings were in sync and started to build a lead, going into the break with a 21-9 lead. However, both teams turned the ball over a lot and baskets were hard to come by early in the contest.

With only five players on their squad—no reserves to come off of the bench in relief—the young ladies from Fond du Lac wore down and the Vikings went on to win the game 45 to 21. Junior forward Katie Peck led the Vikings with 16 points. MaKenzie Fairbanks played a strong game, ending her night with 12 points and a lot of hustle plays on defense. Senior forward Rhonnie Poyirier, the team leader all year, finished her night with eight points. Sophomore guard Molly Quello had eight points and sophomore guard Amery Oberg had one point.

This was the last regular season basketball game of the year before the playoffs start. The Vikings ended their regular season with five wins and 13 losses.

Seniors Anna Hay and Rhonnie Poyirier will be missed. Hay, a starter at guard, rarely scored but often played defense against the other team’s best player. Poyirier was often double teamed, but she still managed to lead the team in scoring and rebounding throughout the year.
