Girls basketball loses to Agates

Following a season home-opening win over Silver Bay, the Vikings traveled to Two Harbors to play another North Shore rival, the Two Harbors Agates.

The Vikings trailed 28-15 at the half, but other than lightning-quick junior guard Sophie Eliasen, the other girls on the team had trouble finding their shots.

With one senior on the squad, the Vikings are young, not very tall and have a thin bench with only eight listed as varsity players. All of this added up to a tough night for CCHS, who ran into a 2A school which had a nice mix of senior leadership mixed with athletic talent and some height. All told, the Agates had too much depth and defense for the Vikings to overcome, taking a 62-29 victory over a scrappy Viking team.

Leading the Vikings in scoring was junior guard Sophie Eliasen, who netted 23 points. Only two other players scored, Paisley Smith had three points, and Abbie Crawford tallied three points.

Tori Botts led the Agates with 28 points.

Head coach Kelly Senty will look to her very young but very talented B-team for help in the near future.

“We are a young team, and it’s early in the season,” said coach Senty.

Against Two Harbors, the coach said, “We had a couple early fouls resulting in early substitutions with a very young bench playing some solid minutes.

“We need to work on our conditioning so that we can play the style of basketball we have been practicing,” she said, adding, “We will have more depth in the upcoming weeks.”

The Vikings have five more away games in December before matching up against the Agates again at home on January 5, 2018. Varsity action takes place at 6:30 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
