Girls basketball loses in overtime to South Ridge

Despite a great second half of play, the CCHS Vikings girls’ team fell 67-63 in overtime to the South Ridge Panthers.

The game was played at South Ridge on Friday, January 4.

“We were down by 15 in the first half but battled back, playing a tough second half with a lot of composure,” said head coach Kelly Hawsen.

Abbie Crawford led the team with 28 points. Ariana Poyirier finished with 18, Alyssa Spry had 6, Paisley Smith 4, Emma Gesch 4, Morgan Starkey 3, and Emmalli Meyers had 2 points.

“It’s always a tough loss, especially in overtime,” said coach Hawsen, adding, “but I am extremely proud of the girls’ effort, heart and hustle.”

Cats of one kind or another seem to be on the Vikings’ menu lately. Last week they played the pesky Panthers, this week it was the classy Cherry Tigers, who are sporting a 10-3 record.

And if neither game was “purrrfect” the Vikings came away with a lot more experience and learned something new in each contest.

The Vikings fell behind 30-18 at halftime and fell 65-30.

Only one Viking, Ariana Poyirier, scored in double figures and she had 10 points.

Abbie Crawford ended her night with 9 points, Alyssa Spry had 4, Emma Gesch had 3, Paisley Smith2, and Rhonnie Poyirier netted 2 points.

“Cherry is a great program,” said head coach Kelly Hawsen. “This was a good test to see where we are at mid season. The girls played a tough first half but struggled to build momentum in the second half. We are learning how to play as a team regardless of the score and to learn our roles within the team.”

The Vikings are now 3-5 on the year.

McGregor comes to town on Friday, Jan. 11 to play the Vikings at 6:30 p.m. The next day former Viking great Brea Boomer brings her Duluth East Greyhounds to Grand Marais to play the Vikings in a mid-day contest that starts at 1:45 p.m. Come out to cheer on your Vikings!
