Cook County Girl Scouts held their annual Court of Awards at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts Thursday, May 27, 2010. The oldest group, high school sophomores, is now considered Ambassadors and will be working toward the highest Girl Scout accomplishment – the Gold Award.
Each Ambassador at the Court of Awards gave a speech about what being in Girl Scouts means to her. Thisis what Michaela Peterson had to say:
“When I was a little girl my thoughts on Girl Scouts meant making bracelets, bedazzling T-shirts, and eating marshmallows around a campfire with 10 other spazzy little girls. Then I started to see it differently—I saw it as a way to go to cool camps, meet new girls, and get fat on Girl Scout cookies.
“Now that I’m older, I’m beginning to see it differently, again. A few months ago our leader told me and my troop that we’d be advancing to Ambassadors. I nodded, and I’m like, ‘Okay. That’s cool. What is it?’ So of course I Googled it, and the definition I found was, ‘A leader. A superior influence on a nation.’
“I thought, ‘Wow. Superior influence. Well that’s dandy.’ But then I thought, ‘What if we actually were?’ What if we didn’t just label ourselves as something like a leader, but we actually acted the part? What if we really are ‘superior influences?’ What if we earned our title?
“And so this year, that’s what we’re planning on doing. Whether it’s through earning our Gold Awards (which we hope to accomplish this year) or just helping out with events like this, Troop 4129 is going to live up to the title.”
