Girl Scouts count their blessings

In this time of distancing from one another, we wanted to share our good feelings with what we have.

Girl Scout Troop 4112 talked about their community and its support of Girl Scouts. Many organizations fail because they do not have ongoing enthusiasm to help keep them alive.

Currently Girl Scouts is 45 years old in Cook County (110 nationally). We are historically many years older— perhaps 75 or more. Our first girls scout troop was in Grand Portage. The troop in full uniform is pictured in the community center. Some of those memories are with us today at the Care Center. What a wonderful beginning.

Scouting works when individuals, families and business believe in the goal of helping girls to develop courage, confidence and character.

An interview with some members of the troop discovered these sentiments and feelings that we would like to share. Girls answering range in age from seven to 13 years old.

Q- Why do you like Girl Scouts?

(Girls) There are lots of activities to do and a variety of camping adventures. We are active, we have more friends, and the snacks are the best! We also like meeting new girls. (Adults) find companionship, enjoy some of the community; it’s a family activity, the mix of ages and schools are rewarding.

Q- What is the best thing you have done as a scout?

A- (Girls) Dogsledding, Mother-Daughter tea, Santa’s Workshop, Holiday celebrations, Christmas tree cutting and a sleigh ride across the fields in December, running a cookie booth, visiting other parts of the county from the end of the trail (Chik Wauk) to the end of the road (the fort and the border).

Q- What would you like to do in the future?

A- (Girls) Have more girls in scouts, go troop camping, sleep under the sea at the Mall of America, ride a train across the West.

Q- Give one word that describes Girl Scouting for you?

A (Girls) Fun. Intriguing. Nice. Chaotic. Friendships. Community.

All of these feelings come from an association with the public that is very positive.

Thank you, Cook County for supporting Girl Scouts, the cookie booths, and buying candy/nuts and cookies which are a great financial support. But we also want to thank you for the kind words, giving time and talents and overall acceptance of this program.

This troop has weathered the storm and shown its resilience. We will see you in our future.

Girl members in Troop 4112 are Holly Belmore, Winnifred Walters, Lily Belmore, Mia Arnold, Mali Shields, Leah Belmore. Leaders are Heather Belmore, Ritalee Walters, Emily Arnold, Op Shields and Arvis Thompson.
