A longtime tradition in Cook County is “Santa’s Workshop” on the first Saturday in December, hosted by the Cook County Girl Scouts. This event includes a pancake breakfast, a fun shopping experience for kids, and a visit from Santa Claus.
Festivities start on Saturday, December 7, at the Cook County Community Center with a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is by donation.
Santa’s Workshop is open for shopping from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a fun and empowering shopping experience for kids.
After adults help children prepare a list of names for whom to shop, a Girl Scout “elf” accompanies them to the secret shopping area, where they can pick out presents for loved ones by themselves. The Girl Scout elves walk children through the process of picking gifts, wrapping, and labeling them to put under the tree. Kids return to checkout with their treasures, and parents pay for the mystery items.
Nothing in Santa’s Workshop costs more than $2, so it’s a fun and affordable shopping opportunity.
There is also an adult shopping area, with higher value items, so parents can shop while their children are doing their secret shopping. Girl Scouts are also baking up a storm for a bake sale and creating some lovely craft items for sale too!
The Girl Scouts have been collecting items throughout the year to offer for sale at Santa’s Workshop, but more is always welcome. If you have gift items you’d like to donate, please call Service Unit Coordinator Arvis Thompson at 218- 387-2487 or email loons13@outlook.com.
Santa Claus will visit the Workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Bruce Johnson Photography will be there to take photos.
This merry event helps local Girl Scouts learn organizational, and customer service skills and proceeds support local Girl Scout activities.
