Cook County Higher Education’s next Guest Lecture series is Discovering the
Gifted and Learning Disabled Learner
on Tuesday, Sept. 14 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Thomas Furman will present the topic and lead the discussion, which will center on discovering and understanding gifted and learning disabled learners. Furman states, “I actually feel that the special education teachers are doing a great job on the whole given all the added work expected of them. Unfortunately . . . there is very little education (especially to mainstream teachers) about what being gifted and/ or being learning disabled really means. Special Education teachers understand the LD side… gifted program teachers understand the gifted side.”
Many people still believe that being gifted means you’re smart, and being learning disabled means you’re dumb. What does being gifted or learning disabled really mean? Thomas’ presentation will include fun, interactive exercises and discussion. Strategies for addressing the issues and needs of this subculture will be discussed and participant ideas and networking will be welcomed. Educators may be eligible for continuing education units (CEUs) for attending; they should check with their administrator prior to attending.
Thomas Furman has a master’s in business administration from Western Illinois University. He has been diagnosed as LD, ADD, ADHD, gifted, and creative/talented, but never all at the same time. He has co-authored articles and books on gifted and learning disabilities, and spoken at international events and presentations. He currently works as a business developer with the Northeast Entrepreneur Fund.
The Guest Lectures are held at Cook County Higher Education’s North Shore Campus, 300 W. 3rd St.
