Get your well tested at clinic at Cook County courthouse

Free testing for nitrates offered by Cook County Soil & Water

The Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District offered free nitrate testing of well samples at the Cook County Fair. Because of the interest in the testing, Soil and Water is offering another opportunity for testing today, Sept. 20, until 4 p.m. at the Cook County courthouse and tomorrow, Sept. 21 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Residents may bring well water samples to the Soil & Water district’s second-floor office to be tested for nitrate contaminant concentrations. To get the sample, run your tap for three minutes, fill a plastic baggie or clean jar with one cup of water, and then keep the sample cool until you bring it in to the office.

Tests are done on a walk-in basis, are free, confidential, and simple. Results are produced in about five minutes.

Nitrate is a common contaminant found in many wells throughout Minnesota. Shallow wells, dug wells, and wells with damaged or leaking casings are the most vulnerable to nitrate contamination. Major sources of nitrate contamination can be from fertilizers, animal waste and human sewage. It is highly recommended to test your drinking water supply on a regular basis, as there can be associated health risks, especially in pregnant women and bottle-fed infants.
