The air is filled with excitement around the Arrowhead Center for the Arts as the Grand Marais Playhouse brings “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” to life on the stage. With a cast of 35 and many local artists providing choreography, scenery, costumes, and props, this ambitious production is set to please all ages and brighten the gray days of November. Don’t wait too long for tickets. This may sell out!

This is the Playhouse’s annual youth community play with a focus on high school age students. Each year, high school students who have had significant involvement with the Playhouse are invited to participate in the play selection for their senior show. Robin Henrikson and Aurora Schelmeske chose this year’s production. Aurora plays Ariel, and Robin plays Sebastian. These two women have participated in many Playhouse productions both on stage and behind the scenes.

This time of year is always bittersweet as we share a final performance together and then send them off with the very best of wishes for their future. Aurora and Robin will be presented with the Grand Marais Playhouse Award for Excellence in Theater Arts at the closing performance Nov. 17.

“Disney’s The Little Mermaid” is full of familiar songs, great dances, and scenes to make you laugh and perhaps shed a tear. The cast has been in rehearsal five nights a week for seven weeks. Some actors play as many as four different parts. The costumes are beautiful, and the scenery and lighting create a wonderful world both above and below the sea. Based on the Hans Christian Andersen tale, “The Little Mermaid” is a story of longing, love, finding your own path and family.

“Disney’s The Little Mermaid” runs Nov. 7-10 and 14-17. Thursday- Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. All performances are at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts in Grand Marais. Tickets are $12 adults, $5 youth, and $3 under 12. Advance tickets are available at grandmaraisplayhouse.com. Box office opens one hour before the performances.
