Ah, winter.
Ha! Winter.
Your attitude depends on what you do with the “a” or the “h.”
For some, winter is a time to head outdoors to ski, snowmobile, snowshoe or drill holes in the ice and pray for a fish to tug on your line while you sit on a tiny bucket huddled against the wind and the cold.
Fun, fun, fun!
For others, winter is a time to sit in the house on a tiny little chair and stare vacantly, hour after mindless hour, at a TV regardless if it’s on or off, fighting off the winds of boredom, huddled against the myopic storm of grayness and cold with wind creaking and cracking and scratching at your door like a hungry, howling wolf.
Fun, fun, fun!
Then again, there is another outlet. It’s called the Creative Community Club and it’s the brainchild of Jill Terrill, owner of Threads and The Garage in Grand Marais and some of her enterprising friends.
Once a month a theme word like tree or respect or purple or some other random word will be posted online and announced here in the Cook County News-Herald.
“You can follow that word in any direction it leads you via the written word, photography, painting, textiles…. it’s your choice,” said Terrill.
The last weekend of the month Terrill will host an informal gathering at The Garage where “Our creations can be shared,” explained Terrill.
Terrill will send out monthly updates on the current theme word with an invitation for interested parties to participate. Joining is free and sign-up forms can be picked up at The Garage or Threads.
The Creative Community Club adopted as its motto a famous Jack London quote: “You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.”
With a club of creativity.
