George Martin Huschle died on May 25, 2016 at his home in Grand Marais.
He endured two years of cancer treatments with grace and dignity.
Born October 17, 1941, he enjoyed a happy childhood surrounded by family and many friends. He attended St. Mary’s Grade School, Cathedral High School, and St. Cloud State University where he earned a B.S. and M.S. in math education in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
He began his career teaching school in Hector and Pierz, Minnesota. Later, he continued his career working in computer analysis for 3M, International Timesharing, Honeywell, Ramsey County and, for the majority of his career, the City of St. Paul. During his work in St. Paul, George mentored many immigrant interns who enriched his life immeasurably.
After retirement George and his wife served two years as English teachers for the Peace Corps in Zhytomyr, Ukraine where George formed lifelong relationships. He always felt these experiences broadened his world view, teaching him so much. In all his work and leisure activities, George was known as kind and generous to all he knew.
George and his wife, Gail, moved to Grand Marais to enjoy the many outdoor activities—winter and summer. Nevertheless, he found his greatest enjoyment in getting to know so many great people. He particularly liked ringing the bell at Christmas for the Salvation Army red kettle drive. Everywhere around town, people always would ask how he was doing and many would stop to see him as his disease progressed. The family thanks all who supported us so well. We know that support made George believe he belonged here.
He is preceded in death by his parents Virginia and John Huschle and his siblings Arthur and Arlene
(Bares) Huschle.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gail (Johnson) Huschle and his children Ruth and John of Seattle, Washington and Margaret of Marquartstein, Germany. His six grandchildren were the highlight of his days: Alden, the pitcher; Olivia, the animal-lover; Martin, the skier; Christian, the piano player; Eden, the dancer; Elias, the Lego engineer. George considered these children his greatest legacy.
George will be cremated in Duluth and a family ceremony will occur immediately. A memorial open house gathering will be held at Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery (15 Wisconsin St.) on June 5 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Memorials to the Children’s Fund at the Cook County YMCA in Grand Marais would make George very happy.
