Members of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa have the opportunity to participate in the democratic process on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 as the polls open at the Grand Portage Community Building for the general election. Thepolls will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Two people are running for a seat on the Grand Portage Reservation Tribal Council (RTC), incumbent John Morrin and challenger Earl Johnson.
Not on the ballot is Robert “Rob” Hull who won the primary election for a vacant RTC seat in March 2010. Because Hull received over 50% of the vote, he immediately won the vacant RTC councilman seat. Hull is assuming a four-year term currently being completed by councilwoman Lorraine Wipson, who had decided not to run again.
Currently serving on the Tribal Council is Chairman Norman W. Deschampe, Vice-Chairman John Morrin, Secretary/Treasurer Dean Deschampe, Councilman William “Bill” Myers and Councilwoman Lorraine Wipson.
Grand Portage is on the site of one of the earliest Ojibwa settlements in Minnesota.
The Grand Portage Reservation Tribal Council is the governing body of the reservation. The enrolled members of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa elect the tribal council officers. The council oversees health care, social services, education, jobs, housing, public safety, and more.
