While watching the sunset over Devil Track Lake, I wonder how long before someone leaves the first footprints or snowmobile tracks across the untouched snow-covered surface. I am not the daring type that wants to brag about being the first, and the lake has a very pristine feel to it before being matted down by man and machine that I would feel guilty about ruining.
There is not a good enough base to safely snowmobile yet, but the Nordic skiers have been enjoying groomed trails for the past couple of weeks. Our children are big enough to try both Nordic and downhill skiing this season and we are excited to get them into skis and equipment soon.
Rachelle and I were reintroduced to downhill skiing three seasons ago knowing that our kids would likely want to learn someday, and we did not want to look like beginners. Lutsen Mountain is much more challenging than the metro area ski hills that we were used to skiing, but we were able to master the easy hills in the morning and a few blue diamonds by the afternoon without killing ourselves.
Lutsen is a beautiful area and the mountain is a lot of fun, my only complaint is that we waited so long to discover it.
Christmas is right around the corner and I will be keeping my eye out for any nice equipment, of the skiing type, for both the kids, and ourselves. Cook County is full of fun winter activities, but you need a big garage to store all the equipment needed for each of them—especially if you like to fish.
