Born on New Year’s Eve in Grand Marais, Minn. during the heavy winds and waves of a 1937 northeaster, Gale Drouillard was the son of Lola and Fred Drouillard. Nicknamed “Stormy” as a child and later known as “Dru,” Gale enlisted in the U.S. army when he was 18 and received an honorable discharge. He relocated to California and worked for the California Dept. of Corrections for 30 years. He was a Correctional Officer at San Quentin, Soledad, Tehachapi and the California Men’s Colony, guarding such notable prisoners as Sirhan Sirhan and Charles Manson. Dru enjoyed watching San Francisco Giants baseball games with his long-time partner Pam. A Grand Portage Band Member, Gale loved to go moose hunting with his older brothers Poot and Bruce. He is survived by three children, his partner Pam, sister Gloria Martineau, brother Francis Drouillard, and many nieces and nephews who have great memories of their Uncle Stormy.
