Award winning vocalist and violinist Gaelynn Lea will perform at Papa Charlie’s on March 1. Gaelynn, who won the 2016 NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest, will take the stage at 8 p.m. The concert is free.

Classically trained violinist and songwriter Gaelynn Lea is coming to Papa Charlie’s in Lutsen to play a solo set of her haunting music for The Current’s Songwriter Series on March 1.

Gaelynn has been bewitching scores of fans with her experimental and ambient takes on fiddle music, an approach that incorporates her love of traditional tunes, songwriting, poetry and sonic exploration. Of her live performances, Gaelynn Lea said, “My aim is to create a meditative, layered sound that allows the listener’s mind to drift.”

Gaelynn’s work most recently won NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest in March 2016, a competition drawing submissions of original songs from more than 6,000 musicians across the country. Gaelynn Lea’s musical reach quickly expanded because of the Tiny Desk Contest. She began touring nationally in September 2016, and in December 2016 she performed in Europe for the first time as support for Low’s Christmas tour. Now she is embarking on another national tour in early March, which has her departing from Lutsen for her show at Papa Charlie’s.

“I am really excited to get back on the road to play,” said Gaelynn. “I had so much fun on our first national tour; we met a lot of wonderful people on the road. I am looking forward to seeing many of these folks again this time around, and meeting new people as well.”

The performance starts at 8 p.m. and is free. For more information see www.facebook.com/ events/246419529134168/.
