Fundraiser marks 25th anniversary of Schurke’s North Pole trek

On Sunday, Sept. 25, Paul and Sue Schurke will speak at the home of Hal Greenwood in Grand Marais to mark the 25th anniversary of Paul Schurke’s historic North Pole trek.

This Schroeder Area Historical Society fundraiser will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. It includes a tour of Greenwood’s home as well as wine, coffee and desserts. The cost of the fundraiser is $30. Call 218-663- 7706 for reservations and more information. Walk-ups are welcome on the day of the event.

Paul and Sue Schurke of Wintergreen Expeditions, Ely, will share their experiences in operating Wintergreen, in Arctic travels, and in equipment design and discuss the historic trek to the North Pole in 1986 that was featured in National Geographic and his book written with Will Steger, North to the Pole. Greenwood’s home is a beautiful Lindahl cedar home of post and beam construction. It contains an extensive collection of memorabilia that chronicles the life of the owner.
