Members of the Cook County Curling Club participated in the Minnesota Curling Association Senior Bonspiel at the Two Harbors Curling Club on the weekend of January 13, 14 and 15. Curlers had to be 50 years and over to participate.

Pete Gresczyk put together a veteran team of skilled curlers, Bob Spry, Brian Smith and Marshall “Dinky” Pederson, to play in this Bonspiel. His team faced some excellent teams from across the state of Minnesota.

The team played one game on Friday evening and won and went on to win two more games on Saturday. The Saturday evening game was, according to Gresczyk, “one of the best games” he has ever played.

Gresczyk’s team played against the Ross Litman team from the Duluth Curling club.

In the final game on Sunday, January 15, the Gresczyk team came up against a team from the St. Paul Curling Club. Former Grand Marais resident Bob Hedstrom was on the St. Paul team. It was a good game to watch.

Gresczyk tied the game up in the seventh end and stole one to win the game. This is the first time that the Cook County Curling Club has won this Bonspiel.

Team Gresczyk brought home the traveling plaque that now bears the team members’ names from the Cook County Curling Club. It will be on display at the Cook County Community Center from now until next year’s game at the Detroit Lakes Curling Club. Congratulations, guys!
