The GOP likes to call the Freedom to Vote Act a “power grab” among many other things. What power is grabbed when Election Day is a holiday? Who loses out? We have holidays for lots of things. Who loses power on the 4th of July? Why would people voting on a federal holiday be a power grab? The Act ends gerrymandering – whose power is grabbed? Gerrymandering is done to give a political party an unfair advantage in an election. Gerrymandering creates unfair advantages… so why is ending it a power grab? Do we want unfair elections? Isn›t that an issue Rep. Stabuer is concerned about? The Freedom to Vote Act establishes automatic Voter Registration. We are in a democracy, yes? Our ancestors spilled blood for freedom, yes? We fought wars to establish democracy, yes? In a democracy people are supposed to vote, yes? Isn›t that the idea? Why wouldn›t we want the voice of the people to be heard?
After the last election it is all the GOP can talk about, alleged lying by the voice of the people, but we’ve only had a couple of Republicans convicted of voting twice or voting for a dead relative… so…why aren’t we registering live voters so their voices can be heard? How is registering a voter who is eligible to vote a power grab? Why is it a power grab? Who is it grabbing power from? We want people voting, yes? Why purge voters? The act works to prevent this. If we want voters voting, why stop them? Who gains? Citizens United made corporations something they aren’t, voters in all but name. Why should something that isn’t stay what it isn’t?
