The Grand Marais Art Colony offers a number of free activities this summer, including the opportunity to learn about pottery with Joan Farnam, who creates lovely pieces like this fiery-toned mug.

The Art Colony in Grand Marais is offering free weekly activities through Labor Day. All begin at 2 p.m., except where noted.

Stop by 120 W. 3rd Ave., just two blocks up from the Java Moose and harbor, for any or all of these events. Contact the Art Colony at (218) 387-2737 for more information.

. Print demo with Jerry Riach Thursdays July 25, Aug. 29 and Sept. 26. Ever wonder what’s an etching, a drypoint, a wood engraving, a woodcut? Curious how they’re made? Here’s your chance to find out in a short, concise presentation by an experienced printmaker. See the equipment used in a professional, ecofriendly print studio. Hear descriptions of the printing processes. Learn what to look for when you look at a fine art print. . Clay demo with Joan Farnam Fridays Learn all about pottery and see how it’s made. Joan will show you how pottery was first “discovered” thousands of years ago and then throw a pot or two to decorate. . Historical facility tour Saturdays Did you know that the Art Colony was established in 1947, making it the longest-lived art colony in the state? Did you know our print studio was one of the first eco-friendly print studios in the Midwest? Curious to see the glass and clay studio? Find out who we are and what we do by joining us for a fun and informative tour of our artistic spaces, see artists at work and discover how anyone can become an artist. . Visit the gift store every day Open daily, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It features locally made artwork, items from the Grand Marais Arts Festival vendor artists and rotating exhibit displays. Items available at $5 and up!
