Here we go again! In this week’s paper there are three stories about proposed projects affecting our area. First, the now defunct zip line. Sad that a private individual will apparently lose money on this, and I suspect the city as well, and now all of us are stuck with a scar on the Gunflint Trail hill forever. Sooner or later somebody will want to put condos or something like it to take advantage of the view, then we will “need” a stoplight on the hill to handle the increased traffic….. It never ends.
Secondly, possible paving of the shoulder on the same road. When will we ever learn? Supposedly “free” money from state or federal sources always comes with strings attached. Remember a few years ago we were blessed with guard rails on a perfectly straight stretch of the Gunflint Trail because we accepted “free” federal money for the construction. Now paving the shoulders would force the beloved rumble strips as part of the project? Really, do we want this forced on us as well?
Thirdly, the present highway engineer seems to want to go down the same path as his predecessor, namely putting unnecessary lighting on several intersections in the county. Come on, what part of remote rural area are we having trouble understanding? If we wanted to live in a well-lighted area, we would move to the cities.
Keep going folks and as I said in a previous letter we will soon have a very safe county with all the infrastructure of a large metropolitan area that nobody will want to visit or live in.
