Free income tax assistance in Grand Marais

Once again, Cook County VITA/TCE tax assistance volunteers are ready to help low and moderate-income folks and all folks 60 or over with their individual income tax returns.

These volunteers can answer questions about how Social Security works with your taxes and if you qualify for a rent credit or a home property tax refund. International students can also use this service to get their tax returns back.

Assistance is on a first-come, first-served basis – no appointments.

Onsite tax service will be provided at the following locations from February 1 to April 15.

The Cook County Community Center main room at 315 West 5th Street in Grand Marais will be open on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tofte Town Hall will be open Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Grand Portage Post Office will provide on-site tax service weekdays during the post office regular hours.

Bring all your tax documents, social security cards for all in your household to be listed on the tax return and picture IDs for adults. Volunteers will do an interview and review your documents and, in most cases, should be able to E-file your Federal and Minnesota tax returns. Volunteers can also assist with and E-file Minnesota homestead property tax refunds and rent refunds for those eligible.

Supporters of this public service include the Birch Grove Community Center, Cook County Extension, Grand Portage Community Center, Grand Portage Reservation Tribal Council, Grand Portage Post Office. This service is also made possible through grants provided by the State of Minnesota and the Northland Foundation, and of course, the volunteers who prepare taxes.
