Frederic (Fred) Dell,
89, died November 6, 2011 in Hopkins, MN.
He was born on September 7, 1922 in Minneapolis, MN. He is survived by his wife, Jeannette Dell, daughters Katherine Dahl O’Dell, Minnetonka, MN and Karen A. Kangas (John), St. Charles, IL.
He was preceded in death by parents Clara and Harold Dell; son James Frederic Dell and granddaughter Kristin Roy (Dahl). He was also survived by grandchildren, Bryan and Stephen (Megan) Dahl of Minnetonka, Jessica Kangas of Detroit, and Michael Kangas of Chicago and great-grandchildren Nicole and Shawn Dahl of Minnetonka.
Fred served during World War II in the Navy/Marine Corps as a medic in the South Pacific where he received a Purple Heart for valor.
Fred and Jenny were married in 1946. In 1964, they built their year-round cabin on Poplar Lake, Gunflint Trail. He fulfilled his dream of becoming a forester with the U. S. Forest Service where his territory was the “Gunny.”
Together, Jenny and Fred lived the “pioneer” life in the north woods where he enjoyed feeding the wildlife. During Fred’s years there he also did weather reports for the National Weather Bureau and conducted an acid rain study for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. He lived the life he enjoyed and wanted, thriving in “God’s Country.” Daily, he sat outside in his red/black lumberjack shirt appreciating nature’s wonders.
Jenny and Fred would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in December. An old Indian saying they once heard was “Many years, same canoe.”
He lived a wonderful life and will be deeply missed by his family and those who knew him. Fred was a man of the woods and a strong Christian man who read his Bible daily. He prayed out loud nightly for his family and looked to the Lord for guidance. Fred was a very honorable man who continually strove to live a just and righteous life. He many times said of life in the city, “I am out of my element.”
Fred will return to his beloved Gunflint Trail where he will be buried in the family plot next to his son at Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorial services will be private and held at a later date. Memorials preferred to the North House Folk School, Grand Marais, MN.
