Students will be able to earn a four-year engineering degree through unique handson training and a partnership of education, workforce development and private organizations on Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range.
The first of its kind program in the state begins this fall and combines academic instruction with practical experience and builds on the success of Itasca Community College’s two-year engineering program. The innovative program addresses future workforce needs of regional industries, invests in education and advances a continuum of learning within Minnesota K-12 and higher education institutions.
Under the program, college students who have completed two years of engineering prerequisites will, during their third and fourth years, receive hands-on learning from engineering personnel at private engineering, mining, vendor and energy generation companies across the Mesabi Iron Range. Graduates will earn a bachelor of science engineering degree from Minnesota State University-Mankato.
Fifteen students will be enrolled in the program in its first year; projections are for enrollment to reach 65 in the fourth year of the program.
