The Great Polar Alliance Conference just released its allconference selections for the 2009 football season. Of the 32 member all-conference team, the Vikings had two first team selections in senior linebacker Kipp Sande and sophomore wideout Dylan Quaife. The Vikings also had two honorable mention selections in seniors Brock Hommerding and Jacob Rude.
Senior halfback Brock Hommerding had 127 carries for 569 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Hommerding was also a consistent special team threat, gaining 398 yards on 15 kick returns for a 26.5 yard average, which included a touchdown return in week six of the season against Barnum. Hommerding scored three touchdowns and intercepted three passes on the season as well.
Jacob Rude led the Vikings’ defense with 105 tackles. Rude also had two fumble recoveries, two sacks, and six tackles behind the line of scrimmage. His consistent play and leadership was crucial to Cook County in an injury-plagued season. After starting the season at fullback, Rude selflessly moved to the offensive line and became the anchor of the Vikings’ front five.
Sophomore Dylan Quaife instantly became one of the top playmakers in the area with his combination of speed and size. Quaife caught 17 passes for 417 yards and seven touchdowns. He averaged 24. 5 yards per catch and was a big play threat on every down. Quaife also rushed for 117 yards on 23 carries, averaging 5.1 yards per carry. In addition, Quaife returned 15 kickoffs for 332 yards.
Defensively, Quaife was the Vikings’ second-leading tackler from his cornerback position with 78 tackles. He added a blocked punt, a sack, and eight tackles for losses.
Despite missing four games due to a severely broken thumb, senior Kipp Sande instantly became the Vikings’ “go-to” player from his fullback and linebacker positions. In just five games, Sande rushed for 428 yards on 56 carries, averaging 7.6 yards per carry while scoring six touchdowns. On defense, Sande was lethal, averaging 15 tackles a game, for a total of 75 on the season.
