Former Cook County High School teammates Kale Boomer and Leo Johnson had a friendly reunion on the football field following last Saturday’s wild collegiate game played at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul.

It was a game that saw many lead changes and nearly saw the underdog Concordia Golden Bears upsetting the heavily favored Bulldogs.

Boomer is a junior defensive back for UMD and plays on special teams while Leo, a redshirt freshman, is an outside linebacker for Concordia who plays on the scout team during practice.

Both were outstanding quarterbacks for CCHS, as well as strong defensive players.

During the game Boomer recorded several tackles on special teams and UMD needed every one of them, rallying from a 14-0 deficit and down 35-27 at the half, the ‘Dogs took a 52-49 lead late in the game and then watched the Golden Bears march it to their 10 yard line as time ran out.

Leo is the son of Chris and Terri Goettl, Grand Marais. He is a 2016 graduate of CCHS.

Kale is a 2013 CCHS graduate. He is the son of Mike and Lori Boomer, Grand Portage.
