After red-shirting her freshman year because of a knee injury, Essa Jacobsen has been putting up some big numbers for the Mesabi Range Community & Technical College Lady Norse basketball team.
Essa finished second on her team in points scored and second in rebounding. For the year, Mesabi ended with a 24-6 record. A 2010 graduate of CCHS, Essa scored over 1,000 points and pulled down an astonishing 1,400 rebounds for her high school career. She was recently named first team all-conference and received all-state honors.
Kristina Nelson, a 2010 CCHS graduate, is a sophomore at Mesabi. She played her way into the starting line-up and got lots of minutes for the Lady Norse team. Although the Lady Norse fell in the Region 13B title game 67-49 to Northland, both Tina and Essa led their team with 10 points each.
As a freshman at Wisconsin Stout State, Brea Boomer figured it would take awhile to get some playing time. And it did. But the hard-working Boomer fought her way into the starting lineup as a forward, and her physical play added a needed spark to the team, said her former Assistant Varsity Coach John Jacobsen. Boomer was also a 1,000-point scorer for the CCHS Vikings.
Ailee Larson was a frenetically fast-paced high-energy guard for the Vikings last year, and she definitely could have played in college, but she opted to run track and cross country at St. Catherine’s (St. Kate’s) in St. Paul.
Originally Larson attended college in Montana but she transferred after fall quarter and began training for track. Recently Larson, who finished fourth at state in the 800-meter run last year, placed second in the mile and second in the 800-meter run at the Bethel (indoor) Invitational. Larson recorded 5:31.39 for the mile and 2:26.53 for the 800. Both times place her fifth on the all-time indoor list for St. Kate runners.
