Former Grand Marais resident killed in collision

James (Jimmy or Mully) Mulligan, age 56, was killed on Sunday, October 9, in Duluth when he was struck by a pickup truck as he was walking across the intersection of Sixth Avenue East and Sixth Street.

Savanna Olson, 21, drove the pickup truck. The accident happened just before 2 p.m., reported the Duluth Police.

According to the police report, Olson was turning onto the avenue when her vehicle struck Mulligan, who was crossing the intersection. Jimmy, who was within blocks of his home, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jim was born and raised in Grand Marais. His family moved to Duluth when he was a teenager and he graduated from Duluth Central High School. Jim, who had many relatives in the area, moved back to Grand Marais and worked at East Bay Hotel as a cook for many years. Health problems forced him to quit a profession that he loved, but he remained a great cook to the end.

A gifted mechanic, Jim could fix anything. He loved to fish, play cards, and he liked to drink a beer now and then.

Duluth Police said an investigation is ongoing, but a final report about the incident is not expected anytime soon.
