The U.S. Forest Service opened its quota permit system for overnight paddle, hiking and motor trips, and motorized day trips for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on May 1.
Visitors who are taking an overnight trip into the BWCAW from May 1 to September 30 are required to obtain a quota permit.
Permits must be picked up on the entry date or one day earlier by the permit holder leader or an alternate group leader. Permit holders must watch a Leave No Trace & Tread Lightly video series before entering into the BWCAW.
In Cook County permits can be picked up at the Gunflint Ranger District Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and at the Tofte Ranger District for the same days and hours.
Only the permit holder or an alternate permit holder pick up the permit at the time of the reservation and a photo I.D. is required.
