Cook County News Herald

Forest fire danger high

Even with the rain that fell on Sunday night, July 5, Cook County is still considered by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources as an area where a forest fire could easily start if a fire is left unattended or not properly extinguished.

Current burning restrictions allow for variance permits only. The day before, on July 4, the DNR placed Cook County under the “No open burning campfires allowed” category.

Meanwhile forest fires have been ravaging our neighbors to the north.

Our Canadian neighbors in Ontario have reported a series of forest fires in the last week due to the intense heat sweeping the area.

Last Saturday, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry said 20 new fires had sprung up in the northwest region of Ontario.

By Monday, July 6, only four fires were under control while 16 were considered not under control.

If the unexpected high heat continues and the northland doesn’t get more precipitation, the entire area will remain an area of concern for potential forest fires.
