It took three plays for the Viking football team to show fans what they might come to expect this fall. Peter Warren took a hand-off from quarterback Kale Boomer and behind an onslaught of excellent blocks found a gaping hole to explode through and raced 43 yards for a touchdown.
On the next series of plays Two Harbors faced a thirdand one deep in their territory and were flagged for an offside, making it third and six. The Vikings stopped the Agates and got the ball back mid-field and promptly marched right back down the field to score on a 5-yard touchdown run by Boomer a few minutes later. The kids from Two Harbors were barely off the bus and the score was 12-0.
And then it got much, much worse for the large double A school as the Vikings used a well rounded running and passing attack to keep the Agates guessing just who was going to score on them next.
The Vikings scored three more times in the first half. Colin Everson made a nice catch to score from 16 yards out and then Warren took the ball for an 80-yard cross country touchdown romp that was followed by another Boomer touchdown run after he scooted in from 11 yards out. During that stretch Everson converted on two extra point kicks and Boomer ran the ball in for two points on the extra point conversion attempts.
After playing just about perfect the Vikings went into the locker room up 35-0 at halftime.
Before going out with an injury to his ankle early in the third quarter, Boomer was 8 of 14 for 114 yards and two touchdowns, both to Everson. Mark Marxen, Peter Warren, Everson and Boomer all gobbled up huge chunks of yardage on the ground behind some excellent blocking from the offensive line.
But give the kids from Two Harbors credit. With Boomer and Justin Goldstein off the field nursing injuries in the second half, the Agates scored on an 80-yard running play in the third quarter and showed they weren’t going to give up.
Although that was the only touchdown against Cook County’s varsity, Two Harbors managed to score three more TDs against the junior varsity in the fourth quarter. It was a half where the two teams traded touchdowns with the Vikings coming out on top 55-26 at the end of the game.
Viking coaches named Colin Everson offensive player of the game. Everson had 7 carries for 74 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 42 yards and one touchdown and, to top it off, had a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Everson also filled in nicely at quarterback when Boomer went down.
Defensive player of the game was Clay Johnson. Johnson led the team with nine tackles, one sack, and one tackle for a loss.
After the game Head Coach Mitch Dorr said, “I think we played well for the first game of the season. We need to work on quite a few things and clean up some unnecessary mistakes, but for a first game, we did OK.”
When asked who might have surprised him with his play, Dorr said, “I thought Thomas Anderson played well in his first varsity game. After sitting out last year, he looked very good on both offense and defense. I also thought Jake Carlson looked good in his first varsity action.”
Dorr was also asked if Viking fans (and opponents) would see as much passing as we did this first game.
“We threw the ball 15 times in the first half. I don’t know if you will ever see more passing than that, but will we throw with the guys we have? Absolutely.”
