The Cook County Vikings football team’s record is now 2-0 after their 26-14 victory over the Silver Bay Mariners.
The game was played Friday, September 10 in Silver Bay.
Viking junior quarterback Paul Dorr had a big day, scoring three touchdown and intercepting two passes.
Silver Bay’s Jacob Carpenter got the Mariners on the scoreboard early with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jake Stadler. Elijah Blanck’s extra point kick was good, and the Mariners were up 7-0.
The Vikings responded in the second quarter when Paul Dorr ran in from two yards to make it 7-6. The Vikings two-point conversion run failed, but the Vikings were able to score again in the second quarter on a one-yard run by Dorr to make it 12-7. Once again, the two-point conversion play—this time a pass— failed and the Vikings went into halftime up 12-7.
Viking running back Ray Dressely put the Vikings on the scoreboard in the third quarter on a nifty eight-yard touchdown run and the Vikings led 18-7. Once again the two-point conversion try failed.
During fourth quarter play the Mariners scored a touchdown on a nine-yard scamper by Jacob Carpenter and once again Elijah Blanck’s extra point kick was good.
Now holding a narrow 16-14 lead, the Vikings marched down the field and once again Paul Dorr ran for a touchdown, this time from six yards out. And finally, the Vikings scored two points on the conversion try when Paul connected on a pass to Ryan Christiansen and the Vikings held on to record a 26-14 victory.
Offensive stats
Ray Dressely had 37 rushing attempts and ran for 164 yards, a 4.4 per carry average and one touchdown. Ray caught one pass for 15 yards.
Paul Dorr rushed 12 times for 61 yards, averaging 5.1 yards per carry, scoring three touchdowns.
Paul completed five of seven passes for 61 yards.
Kole Anderson rushed four times for 24 yards, averaging 4.7 yards with a long run of 15 yards. Kole caught two passes for 19 yards. Kole is the lead blocker for the other runners on the team.
Recko Helmerson caught one pass for 24 yards.
Ryan Christiansen caught one pass for three yards.
The Vikings gained 249 yards on the ground and 61 yards in the air. Silver Bay gained 126 yards on the ground and 151 yards through the air. The Vikings ended with 310 total yards to 277 for the Mariners.
Both teams had five penalties in the game.
Defense stats
Ryan Christiansen led the team with 12 tackles. Ray Dressley finished with eight, Paul Dorr six, Kole Anderson four, Jacob Dorr four, Ben Rex three, Rayce Gibson one, Cy Oberholtzer one and Ryan Smith one.
Kicking stats
Ray Dressely averaged 39 yards on five kickoffs and 23.5 yards on two punts. Rayce Gibson returned one kick for nine yards, Ryan Christiansen returned one kick for 21 yards and Ray Dressely ran one kick back for 16 yards.
