The Cook County Vikings traveled to Cherry to play the Tigers on Friday, September 16, and the game quickly got out of hand. The Vikings kicked off to begin the game and Mason Heitzman returned the opening kick-off 76 yards for a touchdown, which was just the start of a parade of points from Cherry. The score was 8-0 after the Tigers completed the 2-point conversion following Heitzman’s run to the endzone.

Cherry went on to score 53 more points to take a 62-0 victory over the Vikings on a wet, soggy day that saw the Vikings having a hard time holding on to the football and Cherry playing an all-around great game.

In the opening quarter Cherry’s running back Noah Asuma ran for 14-yards to score, and with the two-point conversion, Cherry led 16-0 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Cherry quarterback Isaac Asuma threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Sundquist, and Noah Asuma ran for the two-point conversion.

Next, Sundquist ran for three yards to score and Isaac Asuma ran in the two-point conversion. The Tigers ended their second quarter scoring when Isaac Asuma ran for a 39-yard touchdown and then passed to Andrew Staples for the two points to make it 40-0 at the half.

For Cherry, the game offered some redemption. Last year the Tigers lost to Cook County in a game played here. And for Cook County, who was coming off a big 38-8 win over McGregor two weeks ago, the game left some questions that need to be answered.

Viking quarterback Hunter Rex was 4-14 passing for 46 yards. MaCoy Fairbanks, an eighth grader, had one catch for 26 yards. Amos Falter had two catches for 15 yards and Kole Anderson one catch for five yards.

The Vikings rushed for 126 yards. Amos Falter had one carry for 26 yards, Jordan Backstrom rushed three times for 14 yards, Ray Dressely had two carries for 14 yards, Ryan Christiansen had nine carries for 41 yards and Rohan Rude ran the ball four times for five yards.

Rayce Gibson had one punt return for 20 yards and Amos Falter returned one punt for 15 yards.

On defense Kole Anderson led with 15 tackles and one quarterback sack. Recko Helmerson had seven, Hunter Rex seven, Ryan Smith five, Ryan Christiansen five, Rayce Gibson four, Rohan Rude four, Ben Rex four, and Calvin Battees three. Oscar Mielke and Ryan Smith each had one quarterback sack.

With the loss, the Vikings are 1-1. Last week the team didn’t play, and that week off might have hurt the Vikings.

The Vikings play Ely tonight, Friday, September 23, at home. The varsity takes the field at 7 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
