The newly combined Carlton/Wrenshall Raptors came to Grand Marais last Friday night to square off against the Cook County Vikings on Lyle Anderson field and the Vikings came away with a tough loss.

The newly joined Carlton-Wrenshall team will have to play 11-man football in the playoffs, but for the remainder of this season they are matched up against 9-man squads.

Carlton scored a touchdown in the first quarter and their big quarterback kicked the extra point to go up 7-0. A touchdown midway through the second quarter behind a 51-yard pass play and short run with the extra point kick made it 14-0.

Late in the second quarter the Vikings turned the ball over on downs and were forced to punt. A short punt gave the Raptors the ball on the Vikings’ 47-yard line, and the Raptors promptly moved the ball down the field to the end zone. The Raptors missed the extra point kick and went into the locker room up 20-0.

Both teams played good defense in the second half of the game, and neither team could score.

Except for giving up a couple of big plays in the first half, the Vikings defense did a good job of swarming the Raptor ball carriers and receivers, stopping the Carlton/ Wrenshall offensive attack from doing much damage, and shutting them out in the second half. Staff photo/Brian Larsen
