The Cook County High School football team ended its season in Ogilvie, MN when the Vikings lost 16-6 to Ogilvie on Oct. 26.

Despite the results, the team improved on its performance 11 days earlier when it lost 30-14 to Ogilvie. Overall the team finished with three wins and six losses. They finished fifth out of eight teams in the Great Polar League Alliance (Red) division.

The Vikings got on the board first, scoring on a 25-yard touchdown throw from quarterback Sophomore Kale Boomer to Sophomore Colin Everson. Ogilvie stuffed the extra point conversion run and the Vikings led 6-0 after the first quarter of play.

Ogilvie got on the board in the second period on a 55-yard run. Their two-point try was good and Ogilvie went into the locker room up 8-6.

“Our young guys actually handled the weather better than Ogilvie. We were fired up to play and I was really proud of our effort. We grew up last night,” Head Coach Mitch Dorr said.

Colin Everson (16) was one of several key sophomore starters for the young Viking team this year. Colin played tight end on offense and defensive back on defense.

Despite playing tough and staying focused, the Vikings were unable to score in the third quarter. Ogilvie scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run and again came away with the two-point conversion to take a 16-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

Bad weather kept both teams from scoring as much as physical play did in the fourth quarter. The final score was 16-6 and the Vikes’ season ended.

“What a crazy night. The weather was unlike anything I have ever experienced,” said Dorr.

“Thewind was so bad that we didn’t attempt to punt. Ogilvie attempted three punts but never got the snap back to the punter due to the wind. When you were with the wind, you definitely had the advantage. We scored right away with the wind and missed a few other opportunities,” Dorr added.

Passing the ball wasn’t an option, Dorr said, neither was pitching the ball to either of the Vikings’ speedy tailbacks, Dylan Quaife or Peter Warren.

“In the second half they [Ogilvie] loaded 11 defenders in the box and not being able to pass, we just couldn’t find a way to block everyone,” Dorr said.

“It was tough. We really couldn’t pitch the ball on the option. We were severely limited to just some basic plays because of the strong wind gusts and the rain. It was tough going,” added Dorr.

While many of the Vikings will return next year, Dorr said the outgoing seniors would be greatly missed.

“Our seniors, Will Petty, Nick Austin, Dene Taylor, Stein Jacobsen, Trevor Pehrson, and Brandon Dahl gave us everything they had this season. We are all very proud of everything they gave to this team,” Dorr said.

Next week All-Conference awards will be made known. Several Vikings are up for awards. More on those honors in the following issue.
