The Vikings traveled to Ely last Wednesday, October 14, to face the Timberwolves on the gridiron. It was a cold, windy, wet day, and when the game was over, the Vikings had lost 20-0.

Sophomore halfback Jack Kernz led Ely with 132 yards of rushing on 23 carries. He also caught one ball for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Ely took the opening kickoff and methodically marched down the field. Once the Timberwolves were close to the Viking endzone, they handed the ball off to 250-pound Lane Anderson, who usually lines up as a defensive lineman. Anderson, shedding Viking tacklers, carried the ball for six yards and a touchdown.

During the second quarter Ely quarterback Mason Davis completed his only pass of the day when he hit Kernz on a screen pass. The sophomore speedster weaved his way through Viking defenders on his way to a 70-yard touchdown run.

An Ely touchdown in the third quarter ended the scoring as neither team could find their footing in the fourth quarter.

Coaches worked with the kids on blocking technique on one end of the field while quarterbacks, half backs, and wide receivers practiced on the other end of the field.

The Vikings ended their night with 176 yards of offense while Ely had 302 yards of total offense.

Aram Falter led the Vikings in rushing, carrying 20 times for 68 yards. Shaun Brozek gained 40 yards on three carries, and Paul Dorr ran for 28 yards on three carries. Paul Dorr completed four of eight passes for 40 yards, with three of those passes going to Brozek, who gained 43 yards. One completed pass lost three yards.

On defense Kole Anderson and Vaughn Swindelhurst led the team in tackles with nine each. Danny Deschampe, Shaun Brozek, and Ryan Christiansen each had eight tackles with Aram Falter seven, Ray Dressley five, Isaiah Deschampe three and Jacob Dorr three. Paul Dorr and Jonathan Husky each had one tackle.

After the game, one of the Viking players said, “We weren’t finishing our tackles,” and that pretty much summed up the game.

With the loss, the Vikings are now 0-2 on the year.

On Friday, October 23, the 0-2 Vikings travel to South Ridge to play the Panthers. South Ridge won their first two games 48-6 over Ely and 44-0 over Northeast Range, so the Vikings have their work cut out for them.
