Follow the rules of the road while biking

Dear bikers (of the pedaling persuasion):

First of all, let me say, I am a huge fan of biking. Not only is it great exercise, but you don’t have to pay for passes, licenses, permits, or insurance. It can be done by people of all ages, and is a great way for kids to get around on their own. Biking has become super trendy these days.

That being said, I must admit, this trend has me somewhat hot under the collar. I have an important question for you bikers… Are you pedestrians or vehicles? The answer is neither.

Please stay off the sidewalks. They are meant for people. There is a lovely (and very expensive) bike path, which was made just for you non-pedestrians.

I’m also happy to share the roads with you non-vehicles, as long as you obey the traffic laws, which you must according to Minnesota Statute 169.222. Stop signs are for you as well. I can’t believe how many times a biker is in front of, or behind me, and just blows right through a stop sign. The statute also reads that “an arm signal to turn right or left must be given continuously during the last 100 feet traveled by the bicycle before turning” and “shall be given while the bicycle is stopped, waiting to turn.” So, please people, do not bike around all willy-nilly without using your “blinkers.” Hand signals are not optional.

Furthermore, “no person shall operate a bicycle at nighttime, unless the bicycle is equipped with (1) a lamp which emits a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet and (2) a red reflector [a type approved by the Department of Public Safety] which is visible at distances from 100-600 feet in front of lawful lower beams of headlamps on a motor vehicle.” Please, bikers, you are not Batman. I need to see you!

Listen, I don’t want to ruin biking for anyone, I am simply asking for a bit more caution. Adult bikers, please observe how the little ones are riding their bikes, stopping at stop signs, looking both ways, and watching out for actual pedestrians and vehicles.

Please be safe. Please realize you are smaller than a vehicle.
